  18. <p>     In the frigid climate of the cold war, the U.S. and its
  19. allies barred their companies from selling high-tech wares with
  20. potential military use to the Soviet Union and the nations of
  21. Eastern Europe. But the current thaw prompted the Bush
  22. Administration last week to propose a relaxation of export
  23. controls on 43 of the 120 types of restricted products. Among
  24. them: personal computers, precision machine tools and
  25. telecommunications equipment.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     The U.S. will present the plan next month to fellow members
  28. of the Coordinating Committee on Multilateral Export Controls.
  29. Some U.S. business leaders and politicians argued that the
  30. Administration's proposal covered too few products. Said Sam
  31. Gejdenson of Connecticut, chairman of the House Subcommittee
  32. on International Economic Policy and Trade: "It is in the
  33. interest of the U.S. to provide advanced technology to the
  34. countries of Eastern Europe. The President's proposals don't
  35. begin to meet the need."
